The August 2015 issue of the American Journal of Nursing featured a story, In a U-Turn, the ANA Supports the National Nurse Act that highlights the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) support for the National Nurse Act of 2015. The ANA joins 110 endorsing bodies for this legislation. Organizational leaders and state legislatures recognize this bill is needed to bring forth the significant and trusted voice of nurses to the ongoing conversation about health and health care in America with an emphasis on prevention.
ANA President Pam Cipriano noted that changes were made to a previous version of the bill that “strengthen the focus of the CNO role to advocate for programs in public health and advise on policy.” One example provided in the article is that H.R. 379 / S. 1205 call for a biennial report be presented to Congress on the “state of the Commissioned Corps of the PHS Nurse Category. Cipriano went on to say, ”With these changes, the ANA's board voted to support this legislation, which recognizes the important role nurses play in improving the health of the nation.”
